Elevate Your Art: Custom DIY Matting

It’s all in the details! Discover how a simple DIY project can transform your space. By covering picture frame mats with unique fabrics, you can add a custom touch to your framed artwork or photos, instantly enhancing your style and making your decor truly one-of-a-kind.

Materials Needed:

  • Mat Board: Available at craft stores or online. (Mine came with the picture frame.)

  • Fabric: Choose any fabric that complements your decor. (I had a remnant on hand.)

  • Spray Adhesive or Hot Glue Gun: This fabric was thick so I used a hot glue gun sparingly. For light or medium weight fabrics, I recommend spray adhesive

  • Scissors or Rotary Cutter

  • Iron and Ironing Board

Prepare the Fabric:

  • Iron the fabric to remove any wrinkles.

  • Lay it flat with the wrong side facing up.

Position the Mat:

  • Place the mat upside down on the fabric, ensuring it is centered and straight.

  • Use a ruler or the fabric's lines to align it properly.

Cut the Fabric:

  • Cut the fabric leaving about 1/2″ to 1″ extra around all sides of the mat.

  • Draw a rectangle on the fabric that is about 1/2″ from the inner edge of the mat to mark where you will cut out the center.

Cut Out the Center:

  • Cut along the marked rectangle to remove the center of the fabric.

  • Alternatively, cut an "X" from corner to corner in the center of the fabric, then trim the flaps to about 1/2″ to 1″.

Cut Corners:

  • Cut diagonally from the corners of the mat towards the center to facilitate folding.

Ensure the fabric is taut but not stretched.

Attach the Fabric:

  • Apply Mod Podge or spray adhesive to the back of the mat.

  • Fold the fabric over the edges of the mat and press firmly to secure it.

  • Ensure the fabric is taut but not stretched.

Dry and Assemble:

  • Let the mat dry completely.

  • Once dry, place the mat back into your frame.

With this simple DIY, you’ve added a unique, custom touch to your frames, effortlessly elevating your space.
